It is difficult to overstate the importance of the extracellular matrix (ECM) to tissue function. Not only does the ECM provide structural support for organ parenchyma, but it also serves as an essential regulator of cellular function-via both direct interactions with cell surface receptors as well as the indirect regulation of the availability of soluble bioactive mediators.
