Dubal eyes 2bn dollars Malaysian smelter project

SINGAPORE -- Dubai Aluminium Co (Dubal) has emerged as the likely backer of a project to build a 500,000 tpy aluminium smelter in Malaysia's Sarawak state. The company's vice chairman, Mohamed Ah Alabbar, visited Malaysia last week for talks on the proposed smelter project, which would source power from the recently revived Bakun hydroelectric project. The Dubal official's visit was reported in the local press to be centred around securing a power supply agreement that would be crucial to the 2bn dollars smelter development.
