Codex Commission schedules meeting on root causes of standards held indefinitely at Step 8

The European Union and the United States, acting as co-chairs, are inviting Codex members and observers to participate in a "facilitated discussion" of root causes of Codex standards held indefinitely at Step 8 in the eight-step Codex approval process, according to an update report issued last Friday by the U.S. Codex Office. Until last year, two controversial veterinary drugs, ractopamine and recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST), languished in what has been dubbed a "parking lot" for maximum residue limits (MRLs) advanced to Step 8 but lacking final adoption by the Codex Alimentarius Commission. rBST, which promotes milk production in dairy cows, has been sitting in the parking lot since 1997.
