Importers should look to seafood HACCP for tips on FSMA's FSVP demands

Food companies should take a close look at the FDA's seafood HACCP program as a primer for elements the agency will be looking for in a Foreign Supplier Verification Program (FSVP), suggests John Bode, principal of John Bode LLC. Nobody knows yet how FDA has written its FSVP proposal, which has yet to be released since being sent over to the Office of Management and Budget on Nov. 28, 2011 despite a statutory Jan. 4, 2012 due date. But Bode, a well-known Washington, D.C.-based food regulation attorney, took his best shot at giving the attendees at this week's Food Chemical News-sponsored meeting on FSMA's import provision an idea of what to prepare for.
