Green EU Parliament members slam EFSA over rat study rejection

Green members of the European Parliament have blasted the European Food Safety Authority over its rejection of the French rat study on the long-term health impacts of Monsanto's NK603 corn variety and its associated herbicide, Roundup, EU Food Law reports. Published in September in the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology, the two-year study by Gilles-Eric Seralini and his colleagues found organ damage in rats fed Monsanto's corn variety and Roundup herbicide. The results were seized on by advocates of California's ill-fated Proposition 37 and other biotech opponents around the world. However, EFSA, late last month, issued a press release saying that it rejected the study as as a risk assessment, pointing to "serious defects in the design and methodology" (see FCN Dec. 1, 2012, Page 7).
