Norovirus again most common, Salmonella most deadly

If the decision was based purely on the number of people it makes sick, as one prominent member of Congress recently suggested, norovirus should get the most attention from food regulatory agencies. But when it comes to hospitalizing and killing people, Salmonella remains enemy #1, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's latest report on foodborne disease outbreaks.There were 1,034 foodborne disease outbreaks in 2008, resulting in 23,152 cases of illness, 1,276 hospitalizations and 22 deaths, according to CDC's Surveillance for Foodborne Disease Outbreaks-United States, 2008, released Sept. 9 as part of its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/ mm6035a3.htm? s_cid=mm6035a3_e&sour ce=gov delivery).
