FSANZ examines produce industry's private food safety schemes

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) last week released a consultation paper on what approaches should be taken to ensure the safety of fresh produce, focusing on whether widespread industry-led measures are adequate, EU Food Law reports. Steve McCutcheon, FSANZ chief executive officer, says that while surveys conducted by the agency have demonstrated that the sector does a good job in managing the food safety risks associated with fresh produce, microbiological or chemical hazards can still arise and present a risk to the consumer.
