The European Heart Network has written to members of the European Parliament's Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee, urging them to reject a resolution aimed at vetoing a list of general function health claims approved or rejected under the EU's Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation, EU Food Law reports. The committee is scheduled to vote later this month on a resolution proposed by three MEPs, who cite the European Food Safety Authority's failure to apply different criteria to general function claims compared to other health claims relating to disease risk reduction, children's health or new evidence. They argue that different criteria should be applied to general function claims, which should be based on "generally accepted scientific evidence" and be generally understood by consumers (see FCN Feb. 24,2012, Page 17).
