The Baltic Exchange Dry Index climbed by 10% over the last two weeks from February’s all-time low of 509 points. However, average spot earnings in all vessel sizes are still struggling to cover their operating costs and remain well below their corresponding year-ago level. Since the Chinese New Year holidays, the most pronounced firming in Panamax rates has been within the Pacific, where round voyage rates have now risen above $5,000/day for the first time in more than six weeks. This has helped lift the 4TC average to a still-meagre $4,669/day, which is below the corresponding averages for small Supramax and Handysize vessels of $5,857/day and $5,056/day respectively.
