The benchmark Baltic Exchange Dry Index (BDI) is nearing its record low of $554 recorded back in 1986, falling by 26% from the start of the year to $564 on February 6 as vessel earnings for all major sizes have struggled to dent their operating costs. Although the composition of the BDI has changed over time, this demonstrates the current depressed state of the dry bulk freight market.
