Political tensions in Papua New Guinea (PNG) escalated this week after current Prime Minister Peter O’Neill refused to step down despite a Supreme Court ruling that said his government was illegal. The court ruled that Sir Michael Somare, who was toppled while receiving medical treatment in Singapore this summer, should be reinstated. News wires reported that Somare may be sworn back in on Tuesday, despite opposition from O’Neill and his supporters. O’Neill replaced Somare in August after the post of prime minister was declared vacant by a majority vote in parliament.
