Economic fears cut into Appalachian prices

Appalachian coal prices lost more than 1 dollars /short ton in the US over-the-counter market today on fears that a worsening economy could dent demand. NYMEX-spec barge coal for delivery in the first quarter of 2012 traded four times at 78 dollars /st before falling to 77.75 dollars /st this afternoon, down 1.25 dollars from yesterday. Second-quarter 2012 meanwhile dropped 1 dollars on the day at 79.50 dollars /st.
