We introduce a new type of biosensor, which we call a biochemiresistor, that can provide exquisrtely low detection limits, rapid response times, and good specificity in biological samples. Wohltjen and Snow introduced the concept of chemiresistors that measure changes in resistance across a nanoparticle film owing to the presence of small organic molecules. The nanoparticles are modified with an organic layer to allow moderate selectivity for a given analyte. The penetration of the analyte molecules into the nanoparticle film causes an increase in separation between the particles in the film and thus an increase in film resistance.
