It was found that a single in vitro exposure to super-high frequency electromagnetic radiation (for 5 h in the frequency range 8.15–18 GHz at the average energy flux density 0.5 μW/cm~2) stimulates the proliferative activity of murine spleen T and B cells. The same effect was observed after exposure to extremely high frequency electromagnetic radiation (for 5 h at the carrier frequency 42.2 GHz, the amplitude modulation frequency 10 Hz, and the average energy flux density 0.5 μW/cm~2). It was shown that the exposures of mice to both super-high and extremely high frequency electromagnetic radiation cause no significant changes in the activity of natural killer cells. The responses of isolated cells to in vitro irradiation differed from the responses to the total-body irradiation of the animals. For example, exposure of natural killer cells of murine spleen to extremely high frequency electromagnetic radiation for 1 h increased their cytotoxic activity, whereas in vitro exposure to super-high frequency electromagnetic radiation for the same time induced no changes in the functional activity of killer cells. Conversely, exposure of T and B cells to extremely high frequency electromagnetic radiation (for 1 h at the carrier frequency 42.2 GHz, the amplitude modulation frequency 10 Hz, and the average energy flux density 1 μW/cm~2) suppressed the blast transformation of immunocompetent cells. The results obtained suggest a higher immunostimulatory potential of weak super-high frequency electromagnetic radiation.
