A possible countermeasure for accidents at rural intersections- visibility enhancement of collision vehicles by controlling roadside environment

Vehicles on collision course are less conspicuous because they come closer without apparent Movement in drivers' visual field. The present study investigated a possible countermeasure to prevent this by controlling visual environment around intersections. 5m width boards were set along the roadside of the other crossing path, which made a vehicle on collision course abruptly appear from behind a board. The experiment was conducted using the advanced driving simulator. It was shown that the probability of late detection was smaller with boards condition compared to the without boards condition, and visibility of the vehicles of collision course can be enhanced by controlling the visual environment around rural intersections.
