Effect of He-Ne laser (#lambda# = 632.8 nm) irradiation on successive generations of Torulopsis sphaerica yeast cells were studied on ultrathin sections by electron microscopy. Morphometric analysis of mitochondria and spatial reconstruction of these organelles using serial sections throughout the whole budding cells were performed. One giant and 2--3 small mitochondria were detected in intact cells as well as in descendant cells, irradiated in a dose 460 J/m~2. The mean giant mitochondrion in descendants of irradiated cells differs from that in the control: a lesser branching (the number of mitochondrial profiles per cytoplasm profile area is reduced), a higher thickness and more extended surface, occupied by cristae per mitochondrion profile area. After irradiation of cells-progenitors in a dose 1150 J/m~2 the giant mitochondrion is fragmented. Correlation between changes in a relative surface, occupied by cristae, and the respiratory chain enzyme activity have been discussed.
