Chemical composition and medical biological properties of triterpene glycosides of the far eastern plant Caulophyllum robustum Maxim. (the family Berberidaceae).

C. robustum is of special interest as a source of the biologically active compounds, hederagenin, caulophyllogenin and quillaic acid glycosides. In this work, the names of the glycosides corresponding to caulosides A, B, C, D, G, b, c, names of theplants containing them, and the pharmacological properties of the glycosides are presented. C. robustum glycosides show a wide spectrum of activities, including antifungal, anthelmintic, antitumour, antiprotozoal, antimutagenic, antidiabetic, antispasmodic, antiinflammatory, antiandrogenic, sedative and uterotropic activities. Investigations at the cellular level have shown that the basis for activity of these glycosides lies in their ability to modify the structural/functional properties of cell membranes.
