The study aimed to observe the dynamic articulatory movement using MRI movie in a patient with cleft lip and palate and to diagnose the temporospatial patterns for dynamic changes in oropharyngeal structures during articulation of the patient. As a result, the posterosuperior movement of the tongue and the anterior movement of the posterior pharyngeal wall were clearly visualized in the patient with cleft lip and palate. The observed differences between the normal subject and the patient in temporospatial patterns in articulatory movements of oropharyngeal structures may compensate for impaired speech function in the patient. The MRI movie thus appears to be a promising tool to evaluate speech function in patients with cleft and palate because of its non-invasive nature.
