Alcoa Inc. has completed a "strategic asset review" and will close some plants and cut 6,500 jobs, or 4.6 percent of its worldwide workforce at 40 locations. It stressed that the job reductions would make its operations more efficient as they continue to endure low levels for both aluminum prices and demand.One plant due to close is the Lebanon, PA, foil mill, and it was confirmed this will be the lone total shutdown in the U.S. Alcoa earlier closed its Northwest Alloys magnesium smelter and has 75 percent of its Northwest aluminum capacity idle.
