Desulfonation is the first stage of degradation of benzenesulfonic and p-toluenesulfonic acids by strains Pseudomonas putida BS 1331. Desulfonation of benzenesulfonic acid induced the formation of catechol, which was then oxidized by the ortho pathway. 4-Methylcatechol formed during desulfonation of p-toluenesulfonic acid was not utilized and was released into the medium. In either case, a sulfonic group was released in the form of inorganic sulfite, which was oxidized spontaneously to sulfate. The esulfonating activity was induced by benzenesulfonic acid and depended no on the presence of inorganic sulfur in the medium.
