CARDIOVASCULAR HEMODYNAMICS IN EARLY NORMAL PREGNANCY

Background: Pregnancy requires significant maternal cardiovascular adaptation.Aim: To investigate the cardiovascular hemodynamics that characterise adaptive changes in early pregnancy.Methods: We studied 100 primiparous women (P) with singleton pregnancies at median 15.8 weeks gestation and 10 nulliparous non-pregnant women (NP) assessed during the follicular phase of a menstrual cycle. We measured systolic blood pressure (SBP) and heart rate (HR). We performed pulse wave analyses (Sphygmocor, AtCor Medical) to determine pulse wave velocity (PWV), central SBP (cSBP), augmentation pressure (AP) and index (AI) and AI adjusted for HR (Ale). We used echocardiography (Vivid 7, GE) to determine cardiac output (CO) and calculate systemic vascular resistance (SVR). Data are presented as median and interquartile range. Statistical comparisons were made using the Mann-Whitney test.
