Introduction to the special issue on Video-based research in high risk settings: methodology and experience

A demand for highly reliable performance in high risk settings, such as health care, requires methods to understand and evaluate individual and team performance for a variety of reasons, such as the design for training interventions, process re-engineering and improvement, and equipment deployment. By high risk, we mean the unforgiving nature of a task environment, where there are high stakes at the performance outcome in terms of human, environmental, and economic impact. In designing for high risk settings, one has to be concerned about the identification of vulnerability in terms of technology factors as well as human factors. A fine-grained analysis of human performance, such as the type of analysis conducted with the use of video, can provide a basis for design.
