Introduction To The Special Issue On Video-based Object And Event Analysis

This special issue of Pattern Recognition Letters offers a venue to collect: (1) common problems to solve, such as robust object representations, space-time models, and statistical inference for event detection; and (2) standard datasets, benchmarks, and evaluations protocols.rnIn recent years, event based video analysis has attracted much attention, for events can provide semantic representations of video content. Event based analysis is preferable to shot based analysis, because it describes the highlights or abnormal cases suitable for human understanding of video sequences. Event analysis has many applications, including summarization, browsing, surveillance, and human computer interface. Objects, especially moving objects, such as human beings and vehicles etc., play an important role in event analysis. This special issue intends to provide a representative tour of recent progress in event based video analysis. It will especially concentrate on the common methods proposed by researchers focusing on the following specific tasks: (1) detection of moving objects, such as face, body, vehicle, and so on; (2) event analysis in news video and abnormal events in surveillance.
