Postharvest application of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP, SmartFresh), an inhibitor of ethylene action, is being utilized around the world by the apple industry to delay fruit ripening and maintain apple quality.(l) 1-MCP has been shown to improve manyphysiological characteristics of apples, such as reduced ethylene production and respiration, enhanced fruit firmness and acidity retention, reduced peel greasiness and certain physiological disorders.(2, 3, 4, 5). More recently, preharvest 1-MCP spray application on apples has been investigated as a harvest management tool, with the major focus being on reduced fruit drop and fruit maturity.(6, 7, 8, 9) In relation to postharvest fruit quality, it has been shown that preharvest 1-MCP spray reduces soft scald development in Honey-crisp apples during storage.
