In 1994 Mazda commenced a feasibility study with Ford to manufacture all-new pickups in Thailand which have competitiveness in terms of product and cost for Thai domestic and all export markets except North America. In May 1998 AAT, Auto Alliance Thailand, a Ford and Mazda joint venture, started volume production. AAT site space is 850,000 m{sup}2 (531 Rai) and is located in Eastern Seaboard Industrial Estate, 130km away from Bangkok in southeast. Basic concept is "AAT plant of the Thai people by the Thai people for the Thai people", which aims not only contributing economy in Thailand but also motivating the people to involve manufacturing operations, to gain royalty and to eager producing high quality products at competitive cost. We therefore designed the plant so that the people may work together aggressively, incorporating many ergonomic considerations for the people working there. In October, 1998, management transfer in manufacturing operations has been commenced from Japanese to Thai engineers and AAT started exporting their products in December.
