Just over a quarter of a century since its re-establishment, today's Brazilian Army Aviation is emerging as a very modern and efficient force, with a growing fleet composed almost entirely of Eurocopter models. The requirement to operate across a vast country has also led to important expansion and modernisation plans. BRAZII, IS THE largest country in Latin America, with very extensive borders and a vast, almost unexplored territory within the Amazon. The Brazilian Army therefore has a huge responsibility to protect the population and national interests against conventional and unconventional threats and provide humanitarian support when required, among other tasks. There is a long tradition of aviation in the Brazilian Army, operating, together with Argentine observers, the first manned aircraft in Latin America, when balloons where used for observation during the war against Paraguay in 1867. However, in 1941 the Brazilian Air Force was created from all the existing Army and Naval Aviation units, leaving the force with no air assets.
