The aim of this study was to evaluate the preventive effects of specific antibodies to Staphylococcal enterotoxin-C (SEC) in vitro and in vivo. Specific antibodies to SEC purified from milk significantly (P< 0.05) inhibited the mito-genic activity ofSEC, but not Staphylococcal superantigen toxic shock syndrome toxin-f. Anti-SEC liters in sera and milk were increased after SEC-immunization. In the wild-type SEC or SEC-toxoid-immunized cows, the increases of somatic cell counts in milk induced by theintramammary challenge of 5mug of SEC were fully prevented. The intramammary challenge of 20mug of SEC was prevented in a wild-type SEC-immunized cow, in which the highest specific antibody titer was induced in three experimental cows. These results suggest that specific antibodies prevent SEC-induced inflammatory responses.
