Forest insect pests (the cerambycids Semanotus japonica [S. japonicus], Callidiellum rufipenne and Monochamus alternatus, the scolytids Phloeosinus perlatus, Cryphalus fulvus and Xyleborus pfeili, and the platypodids Platypus quercivorus and P. calamus) were fumigated with phosphine at concentrations of 1.0 and 2.0 g m-3 for 24 and 48 h at 15 and 25鳦. The data showed that S. japonica and P. perlatus eggs were killed completely at 2.0 g m-3 for 24 h at 15鳦, but larvae and pupae of all species werenot killed at 2.0 g m-3 for 48 h at 15鳦. At 2.0 g m-3 for 48 h at 25鳦, all stages of C. fulvus and X. pfeili, except larvae of C. fulvus, were killed completely. It was concluded that it would be extremely unlikely that phosphine fumigation used alonewould be an effective quarantine treatment.
