Basal metabolic rate and its determinants in older males and females.

The basal metabolic rate (BMR) in 46 fit older people (age: 66+or-3 years; height: 163.3+or-9.5 cm; body weight, BW: 59.0+or-10.4 kg) was evaluated in relation to body composition (body fat mass, FM: 15.3+or-4.0 kg; lean body mass, LBM: 43.7+or-9.5 kg) [Japan]. The BMR for all subjects were 1.328+or-218 kcal/day, 22.6+or-1.9 kcal/kg BW/day, and 30.9+or-3.6 kcal/kg LBM/day. BMR was significantly correlated with BW (r=0.87, P<0.001) and LBM (r=0.85, P<0.001). The height, BW, body mass index and LBM were significantly higher in men than in women (P<0.01, respectively). No difference was apparent in FM between the two sexes. BMR was higher in men than in women (P<0.01), but the men had lower BMR in terms of kcal/kg BW/day and kcal/kg LBM/day than the women (P<0.05 and P<0.01, respectively). No significant difference was apparent in the adjusted BMR (kcal/kg LBM+24.5/day) between the men and women. A multiple regression analysis showed that the most powerful predictor of BMR in older people was LBM and followed by FM.
