Comments on Petrak et al.'s 'psychological insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes patients regarding oral antidiabetes treatment, subcutaneous insulin injections, or inhaled insulin': Considerations for language and communication

In A previous issue of the journal, Petrak et al. present a study exploring psychological insulin resistance among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). They examine preferences for hypothetical treatment options in a two-step scenario: (1) oral antidiabetes drugs (OADs) or insulin injection therapy or (2) OADs, insulin injections, or inhaled insulin therapy. As the authors acknowledge, psychological insulin resistance is an important issue, the presence of which may delay the initiation of insulin by people with T2DM or the prescription of insulin by health professionals. The results of the study, although dated, provide useful insights into the favored treatment options of people with T2DM and the beliefs that influence those preferences. However, we have several concerns regarding the terminology used throughout the article and unreported limitations about the communication of treatment intensification options.
