Light and scanning electron microscopic studies on the effects of niclosamide and oxyclozanide on Cotylophoron cotylophorum (Fischoeder, 1901)

Effects of niclosamide and oxyclozanide on the morphology and histology of a digenetic trematode, Cotylophoron cotylophorum were studied in vitro. In both niclosamide and oxyclozanide-treated flukes, vacuoles appear in the tegument, sub-tegumental layer, oral sucker, posterior sucker, ovary and testes. Lesions were prominent in the gastrodermis and the epithelia of the excretory vesicle were also destroyed. Further, oxyclozanide-treated flukes showed atypical eggs with blastomeres of different sizesand shapes. Scanning electron micrographs of the drug-treated flukes also revealed the deleterious effect of the drugs on the surface topography of the flukes.
