Hydrophobic Surface Modification of Stainless Steels

Changes in static and dynamic hydrophobicities of stainless steels (SUS304, SUS430, SUS321, and SUS316L), Fe, and Al plates against storage under conditions of 40°C and 90%RHD were investigated. Stainless steels showed improvement of both static and dynamic hydrophobicities. Fe rusted under these conditions, although it showed both static and dynamic hydrophobicities. Al showed neither static nor dynamic hydrophobicities probably due to its surface roughness. These results suggested that this process for hydrophobicity may require rigid and stable surface oxide layer and is effective against stainless steels.
