Notwithstanding Benjamin Disraeli's reservations, statistics is a very powerful tool in research, especially in biology and medicine where trends can often only be identified by the careful analysis of large sets of data in which lots of things are going on simultaneously. Engineers and physical scientists also use statistics of course, but often it is less crucial to their arguments because they can design experiments with fewer variables and with parameters which can be more accurately measured.
