In this paper, a method of designing a phase-lead compensator for Non-minimum Phase (NMP) systems with a single NMP zero is presented, using Complementary Root Locus. This paper addresses some modifications to the phase-lead compensator design so that it is possible for NMP systems. This modified method has been validated through the simulation of a real-world non-minimum phase system as a case study. The physical plant model considered here is a speed-governing system of a hydraulic turbine unit, supplying an isolated load. The advantages of the designed phase-lead compensator have been illustrated in comparison to the transient droop compensator already present in the plant model. The conditions of applicability of this modified method and the limitations of the method have been stated.
