Shot peening is a surface enhancement technique, which plays a vital role in the automotive, marine and aircraft industries. The textured surface finish produced by the shot peening improves wear and fatigue resistance. This is due to the combined effect of surface finish, micro hardness and the induced cold work. The surface modifications produced by the shotpeening are, the roughening of the surface, an increase in near surface dislocation density and the development of a characteristic profile of residual stress. Compressive stresses are beneficial in increasing resistance to fatigue failures, corrosion fatigue, SCC, hydrogen assisted cracking, fretting, galling and erosion caused by captations. In this paper scientific method was used to analyze the effect on surface hardness and fatigue life of AISI1045 material using air blast type shot-peening machine. This investigation examines the respective effects of influencing parameters such as pressure, shot size, nozzle distance and the exposure time in enhancing micro hardness and the fatigue life. Further mathematical models were predicted for the fatigue life and surface micro hardness from the test results, which will be very helpful to the industries in deciding the levels for the shot peening parameters.
