Although Joseph Carey Merrick (1862-1890) was born under normal circumstances in Leicester, England, on August 5, 1862, his disease began to manifest itself before his second birthday. A swollen lip morphed into a tumor that began to protrude from his face like a snout; his skin thickened and dangled from his limbs and his extremities grew distorted. Despite his deformities, Merrick's family continued to support and care for him until his mother's death in 1873.
