Pain is considered to be the fifth vital sign. Pain is complex. Although pain is derived from a noxious sensory stimulus, how it is perceived is highly subjective. A person's emotional state, past experiences, and expectations all can modify the intensity of the perceived pain. C.S. Lewis called pain "God's megaphone," but this does not provide an excuse for health care professionals not to treat pain.
