CRITICAL OBSERVATIONS OF THE FAMILY AVICENNIACEAE FROM MAHARASHTRA AND GO A, INDIA

Avicennia L. is a widely distributed mangrove genus exhibiting several morphological variations, as well as anomalies. These factors prove to be a constraint in the correct identification of a species and its varieties. The present work is an attemptto confirm the exact species composition of Family Avicenniaceae on the coasts of Maharashtra and Goa. The study deals with detailed review of available literature, herbarium studies and field observations for Avicennia sp. on these coasts. The present paper reports the occurrence of A. marina as a complex, and A. officinalis from Maharashtra and Goa. A. alba was not observed during the study. Some problems regarding the identification of existing species are also discussed. As a result, the paper alsohelps in proper identification of Avicennia species.
