'Eruptive postoperative squamous cell carcinomas' or 'hypertrophic lichen planus-like reactions combined with infundibulocystic hyperplasia'?

To the Editor: We read with great interest the article by Bangash et al in the November 2009 issue of the Journal entitled "Eruptive postoperative squamous cell carcinomas exhibiting a pathergy-like reaction around surgical wound sites," in which the authors described five patients developing postoperative eruptive squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) within and around healed or healing sites of excised non-melanoma skin cancers. As the authors suggest in the discussion section, some of their cases may represent keratoacanthomas (KAs) that may arise in areas of recent surgical trauma. Figure 1 included in the article by Bangash et al also shows a dense inflammatory infiltrate together with a well differentiated SCC. Case 5 benefited from the intake of oral retinoids.
