摘要

Introduction: In comparison to other developed countries, the gap in life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in Australia has remained unchanged for over 20 years. Death rates for Indigenous males and females are approximately four times higher than for non-Indigenous people. This situation exists despite increasing identification and management of diabetes and cardiac disease. Chronic disease management that does not account for kidney disease may contribute to poor outcome for Indigenous Australians. Poor approaches to kidney disease management within communities contribute to an 8-fold incidence of Indigenous people on renal replacement therapy. The cost of this therapy for Indigenous people is continuing to rise and will exceed several hundred million dollars by the end of the decade. Very little evidence is available on the prevalence of early-stage kidney disease within Indigenous communities.
