Should acupuncturists who are trained and licensed to practice on human beings be performing acupuncture on animals? The question posed seems simple — the answer often hinges on whom is being asked. The AVMA guidelines state that veterinary acupuncture is an integral part of veterinary medicine and should be considered an act of veterinary medicine and surgery under state practice acts. Many veterinarians consider these guidelines ideal, but the Maryland VMA can attest that attaining them is not always possible.
