ANIMAL TRANSPORT: PARLIAMENTARY HEARING RAISES MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS

A number of scientists from around the EU presented their research into technical aspects of animal transport to MEPs in the Agriculture Committee on January 21. But Andreas Erler from the Eurogroup for Animal Welfare said that he was disappointed bythe biased reports of some of the experts. "We had the impression that the point of view of the hauliers was much better represented that that of the animal welfare groups", he said. For instance, some scientists argued that journey times, a key issue of contention in the debate on animal transport, had little impact on the animals involved. Research commissioned by the Eurogroup has shown just the opposite, he said.
