An article is presented discussing the goals of medical nutrition therapy for types 1 and 2 diabetes, for special populations with diabetes (children and adolescents, pregnant and lactating mothers), and for the treatment/prevention of acute complications of diabetes and comorbid conditions. Medical nutrition therapy topics include carbohydrates, glycaemic index, fibre, sweeteners, resistant starch, proteins, dietary fat, energy balance, obesity, trace elements and alcohol intake. Topics on acute complications and comorbid conditions include hypoglycaemia, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, kidney diseases and catabolic illness.
