Charles Rice (1841-1901): Creator of the Modern Scientific Pharmacopoeia and Father of the National Formulary

Charles Rice was one of the most enigmatic and influential pharmacists of the late nineteenth century. While extremely reticent about his personal life, he was outspoken about the need to establish standards for items that pharmacists would compound and dispense. Identified as the creator of the modern scientific pharmacopoeia, Rice established product standards for industry, prescribers, and pharmacists.1 Remembered for his work on the revision of the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP), he was also instrumental in the creation of the National Formulary.
