Dow to close four plants and axe 900 jobs in response to continued weakness in Europe

Dow Chemical has said it will close four plants and idle a fifth in response to continued weakness in the European Economy. A selection of capital projects will also be cancelled and some 900 jobs worldwide eliminated as the US giant attempts to save $250 million in annual costs.Andrew Liveris, Dow's chairman and chief executive, said: "These actions, while difficult, are in full alignment with our commitment to continually manage our portfolio to adapt to changing and volatile economic conditions, as we are seeing particularly in Western Europe, and to preferentially invest in our fast-growing, technology-rich businesses."
