Dow axes 2400 jobs and closes plants in response to slow economic growth

US Dow Chemical plans to axe 2,400 jobs, or 5% of its global workforce, saving $500 million a year by 2014-end as the company adjusts to "persistently slow macroeconomic growth". Approximately 20 manufacturing facilities are also due to be shut down over the next two years, resulting in a 50-60 cents per share charge in the fourth quarter for severance, write-offs and other costs.
