Meteorological correlates of FMD in Jharkhand State.

An epidemiological study of FMD virus outbreak in cattle was conducted at Ranchi, Hazaribagh and Dumka districts, Jharkhand, India between November 1995 and October 2002. Meteorological data were collected and analysed, and the year was divided into three seasons (winter, summer and rainy). The meteorological parameters were correlated with the outbreak and attack percentage of FMD. Results revealed that regular outbreaks and attack percentages of the disease observed in Ranchi, Hazaribagh and Dumka districts were 52 and 750, 27 and 403, and 26 and 416, respectively. It was observed that the highest outbreak and attack percentage of FMD were highest in all districts during the winter season. The environmental temperature had a significant, but negative relationship with the outbreak and attack percentage. Humidity and rainfall had no significant effect on the outbreak and attack percentage of FMD. It is suggested that low environmental temperature during winter season favours the spread and outbreaks of FMD virus in cattle.
