Influence of Time of Transplanting and Spacing on Yield and Quality of Bulb in Onion

The experiment was conducted at Ranchi to study the influence of ten transplanting times and three intra row spacings on onion cv. Arka Niketan. Higher yield of marketable bulb (668.12 q/ha) compared to all other times of transplanting was recorded with the 1st week of November transplanting. The maximum size of bulb and total soluble solids were also observed with the 1st week of November transplanting and lower number of concentric rings and neck thickness of bulb were recorded in the case of latertransplanting. The transplanting done during the 3rd week of December did not show any rotting of bulbs during one month of storage. The closest spacing (15.0 x 7.5 em) produced the maximum marketable yield (352 q/ha) however, the maximum bulb size andnumber of concentric rings were observe with the widest spacing. TSS and neck thickness of bulb and percentage of rotting during one month of storage did not show any influence of plant spacing.
