Lessons of pandemic influenza from sub-saharan Africa: experiences of 1918.

There has been renewed debate over whether pandemic influenza deserves a special response in Africa. Since the outbreak of SARs in 2003, many countries in sub-Saharan Africa have developed and implemented national influenza pandemic responses in anticipation of severe viral threat. Despite significant efforts in preparing pandemic plans and devolving financial and material resources, there has never been a pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa comparable in ferocity with that of 1918.
