Wilting et al reported recently that increased gene copy numbers at chromosome 20q were frequent in cervical squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarci-noma . They found in human papillomavirus (HPV) immortalized keratinocyte cell lines, a cervical cancer cell line SiHa, and 15 of 16 cervical carcinoma samples, that there were frequent copy number increases in genes located within the 20q 11.1-12 region. Wilting et al commented that some of the genes in this chromosomal region might be applicable as future tumour biomarkers. To put the findings of Wilting et al into perspective, a more detailed examination of existing data will be useful
